Oh my. Venice. Venice stole my heart. It was so magical! This was our third and final stop on our Italian Holiday [after Cinque Terre & Rome] We walked out of the train station into a heavy fog. Riding on the water bus down the main canal, I was absolutely in awe. The fog made the ride kinda scary, kinda mystical. I couldn’t believe we were there. We followed the directions to our hotel walking down little tiny alleys and windy, webby roads. I loved this hotel [Hotel Ca’d’Oro] and fell even more in love when I opened the door to our room. The walls were covered in cream and light blue paisley fabric, beautiful light blue glass chandelier, and when I opened our shutters I was overlooking the corner of a canal. I mean, come on!! Location couldn’t be better either, from the hotel we were able to walk almost everywhere.
One major ‘Life List’ item for Venice was to go for a gondola ride. Some people say they’re too touristy, not worth the money, avoid them at all cost. Our experience was the opposite. Our gondolier was so nice, so informative, and taught us all about the city of Venice. He dubbed us voyagers, not tourists [I like it!] and we learned so much on our 45 minute ride through the canals. Once again, there were major perks of being there in the off-season – very little gondola traffic and quiet canals. It was magical. Oh and another perk of traveling in December, the Christmas lights hanging in the little tiny streets were so beautiful!
